LAPORTE, PENNSYLVANIA

 
HISTORY

At an elevation of 2060' and a year around population of 230, it is a beautiful small community with much to offer those who know what to look for. Located on the top of a mountain surrounded by State Game Lands, wild life and magnificent scenery are easy to find. Strong community values and many old traditions make it a wonderful place to live or visit. Founded in 1850 by Michael Mylert and incorporated in 1853 it is named after John Laporte who was surveyor general of Pennsylvania. Laporte also is French for "The Door". Being the county seat of Sullivan County it graciously supports state, county and local government and services. A high quality public water system, concerned local government, supportive summer and year-a-round residents are the foundation of the community. The Laporte Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Companies provide modern equipment and well-trained volunteers to the governments, residents and visitors. A Medical Center, Nursing Home and Family Practice Physician provide for Laporte's medical needs. It is home of Sullivan County High School and one of the two Elementary Schools in the County. Lake Mokoma becomes the focal point of many activities during the summer months. The fall foliage is unmatched anywhere, ice skating, sledding and cross-country skiing is available during the winter season.
